Some people are very tactile, and others hate to be touched. In some cases, hands-on instruction may even be forbidden. And for now, social distancing demands we find a new way to teach physical skills while at least 6 feet apart and may even have to rely on the internet and camera as our only contact.

In this webinar Taylor McCaffrey, Orientation and Mobility Specialist for Guide Dogs UK, joins Theresa McKeon, as they discuss the important skill of teaching without physical prompts or assistance.

Taylor will share her exciting work using TAGteach tools to create hands-off instruction for her visually impaired clients.

“When someone has a visual impairment, it is no longer simply about the persons preference, it may impact learning. Physical prompts or assistance may distract the learner, it may startle the learner, or it could even impact the natural movement of their body.”

After more than 30 years as a national level gymnastics coach, Theresa was determined to find a way to speed up skill acquisition for her athletes while simultaneously decreasing stress and fear in the learning environment. Taylor McCaffrey is a Level 2 TAGteacher and has worked for Guide Dogs UK as an Orientation and Mobility Instructor of the visually impaired for the past 6 years and before that at Lighthouse International in NYC. She specializes in learners who require the use of a wheelchair. She holds a Masters in Vision Rehabilitation from Hunter College as well as a Masters in Clinical Animal Behavior from University of Lincoln. She has been a Certified Professional Dog Trainer – Knowledge Assessed (CPDT-KA) since 2011 and a Certified TAGteacher since 2016. TAGteach has allowed Taylor to communicate with her visually impaired learners in a whole new way and neither Taylor nor her learners would ever look back!
