ABOUT MARTIN

Martin Levy, MD, is a board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine and arthroscopy. He is also an expert in anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction and revision of failed ACL surgery. Dr. Levy is a Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at our Albert Einstein College of Medicine as well as the Orthopedic Surgery Residency Program Director. His experience is extensive, notably in arthroscopy and meniscus surgery, including meniscal repair, arthroscopic stabilization of shoulder instability, arthroscopic repair of SLAP injuries and other shoulder maladies in athletes, and arthroscopic and open solutions for patellar instability.

He earned his medical degree from New York Medical College. He was an assistant resident in general surgery at Metropolitan Hospital Center, Chief Resident in Orthopedic Surgery at Montefiore and fellow in the Sports Medicine Service at the Hospital for Special Surgery.

Dr. Levy’s early research focused on soft tissue biomechanics and injury epidemiology. More recently, he has concentrated on optimizing the surgical skills of orthopedic surgery residents using operant learning methodologies. He has created a surgical skills program for teaching the behaviors needed to use orthopedic tools fluently.

Marty Levy has been competing with his disc dogs for more than 15 years. His present border collies, Nan, Meg, Haddie and Nell compete in disc and often demonstrate the sport. Little Meg has been successful in Distance and Freestyle events, winning a combined championship in her first novice competition. Meg was second Novice dog in the Open Division at the Skyhoundz Northeast Regional Qualifier 2012. Marty and Meg came in first in Freestyle and Spotlanding at the Manchester, CT Discdogathon World Qualifier, qualifying Meg for the 2013 Skyhoundz Discdogathon World Championships in Chattanooga.  Marty and Haddie came in second in the Novice Division, Distance and Accuracy event at the 2013 Skyhoundz Northeast Regionals in Annapolis. Meg qualified, again, for the 2014, 2015 and 2016 Skyhoundz Discdogathon World Championships.

Marty enjoys nothing more than teaching handlers and their teammates how much fun playing disc with your dog can be. He teaches handlers to throw and dogs to catch with a systematic approach that emphasizes dog safety and fun.

When not training his dogs, Marty is a Professor of human orthopaedics and a Program Director for a residency program in orthopaedic surgery. He has contributed to Clean Run magazine, writing articles on issues of injury to dogs participating in agility.
