TAGteach Session Sequence
Here is the sequence of steps that you take in introducing a new tag point:
1. Teacher tags teacher’s action: you demonstrate and tag your own action (if possible). Or get another teacher who knows the skill to tag your action in the demonstration. Make a few commonly expected mistakes on purpose so that the learners can see the difference between what gets a tag and what doesn’t. Demonstrate and tag your action for just the one tag point that you are going to work on. Tag your action three times in a row correctly to end the demonstration.
NOTE: if you want to demonstrate the entire skill yourself or with a person who can do it, or using a video, that’s great! Do that first during the Lesson part of the session, but don’t tag during the demo. Use the tagger only when you are demonstrating the single tag point you are working on.
2. Learner tags teacher’s action: give the learner a chance to tag your action. Make a few mistakes to see whether they tag or not. This gives you a great way to assess their understanding of the tag point without allowing them to make mistakes. You may have to explain and demonstrate again until they can tag your action correctly.
3. Teacher tags learner’s action: You tag the learner’s action.
4. Learner tags learner’s action: Peer tagging. The learners tag each other’s action while you move around helping where needed.
Please note the phrasing here. We tag the actions of a learner, we don’t tag the learner. This is an important distinction as we want to be sure that the learner doesn’t feel judged and we want to keep the tagging process impartial.
