Q9: Why is TAGteach not Used in ABA Programs?
Joan Orr: Seany is asking why we think TAGteach is not used so much in ABA programs. Mostly because they don’t know about it yet, but it is coming. We now have several university professors, ABA professors, on some of these webinars, and they will take it to their students and it will spread that way.
Martha: I think the idea of using an acoustical support is still very new, and I have to compare this with the introduction of the visual support. Fifteen, twenty years ago, when autism was starting to become more prevalent and children had behavior problems, people discovered that using pictures would help the children. They developed picture schedules and the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS). So many things evolved that have been very helpful for kids with autism. But the pictures initially encountered resistance because people weren’t used to working with them and they had other qualms about it, one way or the other. Now, visual supports are standard practice everywhere. Nobody questions them. I think it is going to be the same thing with the acoustical support. It’s new. People have to understand it. Eventually, it will be everywhere, but it’s going to take some time. It’s just something people aren’t accustomed to. I always make the point that we’re using visual supports so we’re using children’s eyes; the acoustical support uses their ears. So it’s another avenue. This is going to take time and repetition. We hope that with all of these webinars, all of these people contributing, and the professors, we can get the word out to more people.

TAGteach cofounder Theresa McKeon was invited to be a keynote speaker at the Arizona Association for Behavior Analysis annual conference in 2015.
Several studies have been published in the peer reviewed behavior analysis literature and TAGteach studies have been presented more than 30 times as ABA conferences. Many post-graduate theses have been presented on TAGteach. Click here for the TAGteach reference list.
We are confident that the growing number of parents and behavior analysts using TAGteach will lead to an ever increasing awareness of the incredible potential of this technology in helping autism families.
