Class Management

The video below illustrates the use of TAGteach in managing a class. Note the following steps:

  • Explain the lesson
  • Describe the tag point
  • Demonstrate
  • Let everyone try it

The use of peer tagging allows the teacher to move around helping where required.

Repeat each tag point and go back and forth between tag points so everyone gets lots of practice.

If the teacher notices that learners are forgetting a previous tag point, she merely repeats that tag point, without pointing out the errors. This occurs in the video after the “eyes on the mirror” tag point. Some dancers forgot about keeping their hands on their hips, so the teacher just did a quick repeat of “hands on hips” as a tag point. You may notice that the teacher does not consistently use the phrase “the tag point is” in this video. This is because this is one of the very first tag teach sessions and we had not yet realized the importance of using this consistent tag phrasing.

The teacher tags learners who are waiting quietly when they are finished. This is a useful class management technique.

Beth likes all her dancers to stand quietly in first position while they await instruction.

Below is another video that demonstrates the effectiveness of the tag as a class management technique.

Notice how quickly the remaining dancers sit down after one of them receives a tag for sitting.
