Introducing TAGteach
- Once you have decided to use TAGteach, you will need to introduce it to your learners.
- There doesn’t always have to be a formal introduction to the entire concept of TAGteach to your learners. Generally they don’t want to hear a lot of talking, so it’s best just to get on with it.
- As you are teaching and come across a challenge, simply pull out the tagger and tell the learner that you are going to highlight the exact moment the desired task is accomplished. The tagger will just help make a mental picture of the moment.
- Make sure to give a properly phrased tag point, formulated from the WOOF rules.
- Once the learner masters the tag point, put the tagger away and move through the rest of your lesson.
- You may be surprised when learners start asking you if they can be tagged!
- Add tag points slowly in the beginning. During the first tag experience, maybe only one tag point is introduced.
- It is often helpful to first put the tagger in the hands of the learner. Have them tag you.
- This technique builds learner confidence by watching the task performed correctly.
- This also allows the instructor a moment to assess learner comprehension.
- When the learner tags the teacher at the appropriate time, it demonstrates a degree of understanding
Example: Driving instructor speaking with his client
“OK, get out your tagger. For this next part you are going to tag my actions!”
Lesson: In this car we should shift into 2nd at 4000 rpm’s. So, I’ll push in the clutch, take my foot off the gas and pull the shifter into 2nd when the rpm’s hit about 4000.”
Instructions: Pull shifter into 2nd at 4000 rpms
