Q&A on Video #1

Question: Is taking the ball away from Tink not an aversive?

Answer: It could be an aversive, but I think what we have to do in situations like this is to watch the child’s behavior and how she responds. She doesn’t seem to mind him taking the ball away. The other thing is that usually the treat is coming. She gets a treat after she puts the ball down. If she was showing signs of anxiety or not wanting to give up the ball, you would go back and do a lesson on giving up the ball. I think that Seany has already taught Tink about giving the ball back. In this case it doesn’t look like it is an aversive, but if it was looking like it was an aversive, then certainly you would want to go back a step in the teaching and teach that as a specific behavior, so that you could take the ball away without having any problems. Certainly it is not a good idea to yank something away from a child and cause a meltdown, but in this case we can can see that Tink is quite happy about giving it back and having it given back to her again.
