Using Incompatible Behaviours
In the video example we have been discussing, the gymnast was not able to move her head behind her arms, which would have resulted in the error of having her head touch first, because squeezing the foam to her ears kept her arms in the correct position. Keeping the foam in place was INCOMPATIBLE with moving her arms forward of her head.
Other examples of incompatible behaviour could include a customer service agent who cannot type while talking to a customer if he has both hands on the desk. A child cannot hit another child while standing in line if his hands are in his pockets. While driving, you can’t take a deep breath and curse at other drivers at the same time.
Let’s try to come up with some incompatible behaviors and phrasing them as tag points. Can you come up with some ideas for the last three examples shown in this table? Remember, the tag point must be phrased in terms of something you want the learner to do. The learner does not necessarily have to be someone else. You can tag yourself too!
Undesirable Behavior | The tag point is… |
Continuing to type while talking to customers on the phone | Both hands on desk |
Hitting others in recess line | Hands in pockets |
Biting Nails | … |
Bent Elbow | … |
Eating Cookies | … |
