Point of Success
The point of success is a place to start or a place to return to where the learner is guaranteed a tag.
The point of success is something that you know for sure that your learner can do. It’s a tag point that will 100% guarantee them a tag.
When starting a new lesson the first tag point should be a point of success. Always start with a tag point that you know will give the learner success on the first try.
For example: the coach knows for sure that his baseball player can stand at the plate with her toes at the yellow markers he has placed there.
The tag point “toes at yellow markers” is a point of success.
Subsequent tag points are built from this point of success.

Observation is the best way to find a point of success.
Watch your learner try to do the skill, or the part of the skill that you are working on.
- What does he like to do?
- What is he good at?
- What can he already do?
- Can the learner already hold a pencil correctly? Can the learner already jump off two feet? Can the learner already find middle C on the piano?
Watch the video below to see a point of success in action.
The teacher knows that the dancer can put her hands over her head in the “ta da!” position. This is a tag point that the dancer can easily execute without help.
Before the dancer starts her turn the tag point is the “ta da!” position.
Notice that the dancer does not get her tag right away and she immediately self-assess and tries again. She knows what to do and can do it easily without the teacher nagging or reminding.
Targeting and capturing are two ways to guarantee a point of success.
