The Three Try Rule
If a learner does not succeed in achieving a tag point within three tries, the tag point needs to be reassessed.
You may realize that the tag point is unattainable or that the learner will become frustrated with another potential failure. In this case, go to an easier tag point right away. You don’t have to give three tries. Three is the maximum number of failed attempts before breaking the skill down and giving a more attainable tag point.
There are several actions that could be taken at this point:
- Verify that the learner is physically capable of performing the tag point.
- Check to see if the learner understands the tag point (have him tag the coach or another player).
- Take the tag point out of the skill and re-teach it.
- Go back to the most recent point of success, tag that a few times, then increase the difficulty only slightly for the next tag point.
