Other Transitions
As we know, each day is a series of transitions.
When you know how to provide positive reinforcement so that your child has success with the School To Home transition, you can use these same principles for other transitions.
- Make notes of the sequence of events in the transition
- Set tag points of all the steps your child can accomplish (use the WOOF rules)
- Tag and reinforce your child for each step in the sequence
- Make sure he experiences lots of positive reinforcement and success.
This experience, repeated many times, will help him learn to transition successfully in other settings.
Sometimes your child may not know how to do all the steps in a particular transition, in which case you will have to pull that step out and teach it separately, and provide extra support until the child learns the step.
As always, observe the child, break down the task, set tag points, use valuable reinforcers, and keep on tagging!
