Creating Reinforcers
If you don’t have lots of reinforcers you can create more! Dr. Kozloff explains how:
“Teach the child to enjoy social rewards by praising and hugging him just before you give him a bite of food. Over time, praise and hugs will become learned rewards.”
Present the new item or action that you want to develop as a reinforcer just before you give the actual reinforcer.
This can be done with any item that you would like to turn into a reinforcer, so you may start out with a small number but you can build up more.
