Break it Down Further
If a child is having trouble kicking the ball, for example, here’s how you can break it down even more.
In this picture, you can see green tape on the shoe and green tape on the ball. The tag point is “tape to tape.”
When the child touches the shoe with tape to the tape on the ball, he has achieved the tag point!
If the child succeeds, you can slowly reduce the amount of tape on the shoe or ball, thus “fading” the support.
If the child needs more help, you could, for example, take the child’s shoe off and have him tap the shoe against the ball. Or, the teacher can model tapping the shoe against the ball, then ask the child to copy the action.
This is where creativity and observation come into play! Watch the child, think of how to make him successful, and adapt the tag point accordingly.
Go Back to a Point of Success
When a learner is struggling, go back to a point of success. This is a tag point that you know the learner can succeed at.
